Calibration is defined as a set of operations which establish under specified conditions, the relationship between values indicated by a measuring instrument or measuring system, or values represented by material measure, and the corresponding known values of a measurement. Determining calibration status always involves a measurement. To ensure a measurement made provides a meaningful, understanding and competence, the calibration of measuring equipment must be traceable to an SI measurement standard of that unit.
Calibration is not a warranty of how long an instrument will last. It is purely an indication that the instrument was found to be performing within the specified specification and to check whether the instrument is measured correctly. It provides confidence that the instrument has been calibrated, and is operating according to the manufacturers' specification.
